New Tappan Zee Bridge Project Reaches Major Milestone

Work on the new Tappan Zee Bridge has not gone as quickly as hoped, but the almost $4 billion project has reached a major milestone.

Most of its substructure, including piles and pier columns, is complete, according to newnybridge.com.

The new bridge will replace the existing 3.1-mile-long one, which opened in 1955.

The company building the new twin span told The New York Times a mile-plus of concrete deck is in place and nearly all of its steel skeleton should be done by October. Workers recently began installing the 192 cables that will attach the main deck to several 40-foot towers, The New York Times reported.

Despite setbacks, such as the toppling of a construction crane last month, engineers for the state Thruway Authority said the first section should open in late 2017 and the second section sometime the following year, The New York Times reported.
