Nyack Man Charged With Selling Synthetic Drug That Caused Death

NYACK, N.Y. -- A Nyack man has been charged with with selling a synthetic drug known to have caused at least one death, according to Preet Bharara, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Andrew Grogan, 48, was arrested Thursday morning after the investigation by U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents found he was allegedly involved in the selling of 39 packets of smokeable synthetic cannabinoids (SSC) through the smoke shop he owns called Liquid Glass, according to a release from Bharara's office. 

The investigation began in January 2015 and continued until his arrest, alleges that Grogan sold SSCs, with brand names like “Green Giant” and “Geeked Up,” from his smoke shop, according to the release. 

He allegedly mentioned to undercover law enforcement that he had a supplier from whom he could either pick up products after store hours or receive products by mail, according to the release..

Grogan also reportedly stated to an undercover law enforcement that he was “all out” of the SSC “Green Giant” because there had been a festival in Nyack that had “kids lined up outside the door” to buy the products, according to the release..

The SSCs allegedly sold by Grogan have caused one known overdose, in January 2015, an individual overdosed after consuming a mixture of four packets of SSCs labeled “Tranquility,” “Meditate,” “Karma,” and “Dream Catcher,” according to the release.

Medical reports concluded that the overdose resulted from cannabinoid consumption. Friends of the victim reporteldy obtained the SSCs from Grogan's smoke shop in Nyack, according to the release..

Grogan has been charged with one count of conspiring to distribute a controlled substance, and one count of distributing a controlled substance, each of which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, according to the release..
