"The more the better," said Glenn Monterey, who runs Herb Lack Hardware in Nyack. "Good for the kids, and even better for business."
It's been a slow winter so far for snow-related merchandise including shovels, salt, scrapers, blowers, and car wiper fluids. But on Thursday, worried residents were streaming in and out of hardware and big box stores gearing up for the arrival of Jonas, which is scheduled to hit the area on Saturday.
Snow merchandise has been stockpiled and collecting dust since the start of this unusually mild and dry winter.
"We don't know how much snow we're going to get," said Monterey. "We've heard everything from two feet to two inches but the news gets people to pay attention and to make sure they're ready."
"And don't forget the sleds for the kids," Monterey added.
At Home Depot in West Nyack, salesman Ron Ojeda was busy showing customers snow blowers.
"People do wait for the last minute," he said. "We've been fooled by the mild winter. Eventually snow had to come. Now it looks like it's on its way so we've been real busy today selling ice scrapers, windshield fluid, and jumper cables because people get worried about their batteries."
Snowstorms not only benefit hardware sellers. For some, it means enforced down time, nesting at home, enjoying the break.
Irene Fahlander from Valley Cottage was wheeling a shopping cart filled with firewood to her car in the Home Depot parking lot.
"I love a good snowstorm," said Fahlander. "I'm going to fill the fireplace with wood, and cook. I'm just glad it's supposed to hit over the weekend, and not when people have to work."
