Ready.gov offers the following tips to stay safe during extreme cold weather:

Dress for the weather

  • If you have to go outside, wear several layers of loose-fitting warm clothing instead of one layer of heavy clothing.
  • Wear mittens, which are typically warmer than gloves.
  • Wear a hat to prevent loss of body heat.
  • Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect lungs.

Stay safe inside

  • If the pipes freeze in the house, remove any insulation and wrap pipes in rags. Open all faucets and pour hot water over the pipes where they were most exposed to the cold.
  • Maintain ventilation when using kerosene heaters to avoid build-up of toxic fumes. Refuel kerosene heaters outside and keep them at least 3 feet from flammable objects.
  • If necessary to conserve fuel, temporarily close off heat to some rooms.

If you lose power or heat for more than a few hours or if you do not have adequate supplies to stay warm at home overnight, seek a designated public shelter. Click here for an updated list of warming center locations and hours.
