The longtime Tarrytown Union Free School District secretary and Putnam County resident accused of stealing more than $10,000 from her employer has pleaded guilty to a corruption charge.

Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr. announced on Thursday that Lake Peekskill resident Carol Ressa, 53, has pleaded guilty to a felony count of third-degree grand larceny as a public corruption crime.

According to Scarpino, between October 2011 and March last year, Ressa “used her position as a public employee to steal thousands of dollars from the Tarrytown Union Free School District,” by stealing unauthorized checks drawn from a school district bank account that she made payable to herself.

Ressa is also accused of stealing multiple checks and money orders, which had been provided to the school district by middle school students and their families to pay for various student activities, including class trips, yearbooks and lunches.

Scarpino said that after stealing the various checks and money order payments, Ressa deposited the stolen district funds into her own bank account for her personal use.

In total, Ressa is accused of stealing more than $10,000 from the school district. As part of the plea, she must make restitution to the school district. She is due to be sentenced on May 9 to a term of five years probation.
