Cahn had been on the board of directors of the association’s local chapter since 2008. He was its chairman and had served in many other capacities.

He volunteered as a caregiver support group facilitator and also participated in the chapter’s advocacy efforts as its ambassador to Congresswoman Nita Lowey.

“Andy was an amazing man, and a tremendous supporter of the Hudson Valley Chapter in so many ways. We will truly miss him as a passionate advocate for ending Alzheimer's and as a wonderful person,” said David Sobel, its president and CEO.

Andy Cahn, his wife, Jane, and his mother, Margaret, became increasingly involved with the association following the death of his father in 2001 from Alzheimer’s-related causes.

They belonged to the Zenith Society, the association’s highest and most involved level of philanthropy.

Their generous donations in support of Alzheimer’s research were recognized by the chapter’s creation of the Margaret M. Cahn Research Award, which is given annually to a New York City-area winner of the Zenith Award selected by the Cahn family.

Cahn earned a degree in economics from Bucknell University.

He worked on Wall Street for 14 years before earning a master’s degree in education at Manhattanville College.

Cahn taught eighth-grade history in the Bronxville school system for 26 years. He also was a member of the board of education in the Mount Pleasant Blythedale Union Free School District.

After he retired, Cahn worked at the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center at Manhattanville College.

Cahn is survived by his mother, Margaret; his wife, Jane; daughters Debbie Molfetta (Rob) and Cathy Aanonsen (Lloyd); son Peter Cahn (Mimi); and eight grandchildren Tricia, Gina, Kevin and Joey Molfetta; Eric, Sarah and Laura Aanonsen and Kyle Cahn.

A celebration of his life was held at Manhattanville College on Saturday, Jan. 28.
