Hammer-Wielding Burglary Suspect Apprehended In

RAMAPO, N.Y. -- Ramapo police have arrested a man on burglary and other charges after an incident in Airmont, police said.

The arrest came about when police responded to a maintenance worker’s report of a burglary in progress at a condominium complex on Saturday at 1:33 a.m., according to police.

The maintenance worker was in a ground floor recreation room when he heard someone forcing entry into the building; when he went to investigate, he confronted a male suspect, police said.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, came at the maintenance worker with a hammer, and attempted to strike him, according to police.

The maintenance worker was able to fend off the suspect, and the suspect fled the building, police said.

When officers arrived, the suspect was located and arrested near the intersection of College Road and Route 59, according to police.

The defendant has been charged with numerous offenses, including burglary in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, criminal mischief in the third degree and attempted assault in the second degree, according to police.
