The arrest came about when police stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Main Street in Pearl River on Wednesday, around 1:23 a.m., according to police.

Upon speaking with the driver, identified as Edgardo Guardado-Gomez, the officer noticed the strong smell of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath, police said.

The officer also observed that Guardado-Gomez had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, according to police.

Guardado-Gomez complied with numerous field sobriety tests, which he failed, and was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, police said.

The suspect was taken to Orangetown police headquarters, where he consented to a breathalyzer test, which showed him to be over the legal limit, according to police.

Guardado-Gomez was processed and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, police said.

The defendant was released, and is due back in Orangetown Justice Court in November to answer the charge, according to police.
