Police: Clarkstown, Haverstraw Men Nabbed After NJ Armed Robbery

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- Police grabbed two Rockland men -- one from New City and the other from Garnerville -- moments after authorities said they robbed an upscale grocery store just across the border in Montvale.

Police spotted the proceeds on the front passenger seat.

Michael Mann, 30, of Garnerville, "put a handgun in the manager’s ribs and demanded that he open the safe" at the Fresh Market just after 9:30 p.m. Monday, Police Chief Jeremy Abrams said.

Mann "also stole $20 from the manager and threw [his]cellphone into the trash," the chief said.

Officers who responded instantly found him and Luis Baez, 33, of New City, in the nearly empty parking lot of the Chestnut Ridge Road store, Abrams said.

They "had conflicting stories about their presence" there, he said.

The manager then told police what just happened, the chief said.

Officers spotted the proceeds on the front passenger seat of their car, he said.

Both were being held in the Bergen County Jail pending detention hearings.

Mann was charged with robbery, weapons possession, hindering apprehension, theft and conspiracy and Baez with robbery and possession of a destructive device.
