Orangetown police have arrested Michael Hrynenko on a DWI charge, according to police.

The arrest came about when Hrynenko, one of six defendants indicted earlier this year for allegedly establishing an illegal gas delivery system responsible for a massive explosion and seven-alarm fire in the East Village, was stopped by Orangetown Police on Route 340 in Sparkill for a traffic violation the evening of Oct. 4, police said.

Officers who spoke with Hrynenko at the scene noticed the smell of an alcoholic beverage emanating from him; he was also reportedly slurring his speech, according to police.

The suspect complied with numerous field sobriety tests, which he failed, and was taken into custody, police said.

At Police Headquarters Hrynenko refused to take a breathalyzer test, according to police.

Hrynenko was charged with felony DWI, then arraigned and released, police said.

The defendant is scheduled to answer the charge in Orangetown Justice Court on Friday, Nov. 18, according to police.

The case involving  the gas explosion is ongoing, with Hyrnenko's next court date scheduled for Dec. 1, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.
