Trooper Robert V. Conklin was killed on July 4, 1948 while pursuing a speeding car on Route 9W. He was 24.

Conklin was forced off the road by another vehicle, and his motorcycle entered the center median and struck a concrete curb, according to state police. He was thrown into the opposite lane by the collision.

Before his transfer to the State Police Highland barracks, Conklin was a two-year veteran of the division and had served in several other Troop C stations.
