Officers from the Yonkers Police Department responded to Ash Street shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9, where there was a report of a man who had been shot in the chest.

Upon arrival at the scene, the officers found a 20-year-old man from Yonkers, who had a single gunshot wound. Members of the Emergency Service Unit treated the victim, who was then transported by Empress EMS to a nearby hospital for additional treatment. He remains hospitalized, but is in stable condition with a non-life-threatening injury.

Police said that investigators determined that a potential suspect was still inside the building and a perimeter was established as the criminal investigation began.

Members of the Emergency Service Unit and Crisis Negotiation Team made contact with the suspect - later identified as Yonkers resident Shareef Brown - who was in his locked second-floor apartment with relatives. Brown was taken into custody without further incident. The investigation led to the execution of search warrants and a .380 semi-automatic pistol was recovered.

According to police, the shooting was not a random event, and Brown knew his victim. The two had allegedly been engaged in an earlier dispute that escalated into physical violence and led to the shooting.

Brown was arrested and charged with first-degree assault. He is scheduled to be arraigned on the charge on Monday, Sept. 10.

In a statement, Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardner said, “I commend the exceptional efforts of our police officers, detectives, and members of the Emergency Service Unit and Crisis Negotiation Team, all of whom working together ended a violent situation without further incident and delivered the perpetrator into the Criminal Justice System where he will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
