According to Clarkstown police, Ruth Mendez was arrested about 8:10 p.m. Saturday after security staff at the mall’s Lord & Taylor store accused her of stealing three boxes of Chanel perfume valued at $340.

According to police, store security had previously accused Mendez of shop lifting in November and had asked her to sign a criminal trespass notice in which she agreed not to return to the store for fear of being criminally charged with trespassing.

The practice is common, police said in a statement Monday.

Mendez, 29, was arrested at the scene and taken to the Clarkstown police headquarters in New City, according to police, who said that she was arraigned in Clarkstown Town Court and charged with third-degree burglary, a felony, and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, petty larceny and third-degree criminal trespass, all misdemeanors.

Police said bail for Mendez was set at $20,000. She is to answer to the charges at a later date.
