CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. -- The Clarkstown Central School District is participating this week in an Hour of Code, an initiative to teach young people the value of coding.

During the event, which coincides with Computer Science Education Week (concluding on Sunday), district children ages 6 and up have been exposed to coding through use of popular games and characters.

According to the Clarkstown district, there are several skills learned during coding that can translate into other areas. They include:

  • It teaches them that learning is a process and not a product
  • It teaches them how to take complex ideas and break them down into simpler parts
  • It teaches them how to collaborate with others
  • It also teaches them how to keep persistent and persevere in the face of frustration when things are not working well
  • it teaches determination and risk-taking
  • It helps them become fluent with technologies and enable them to open open up and express their ideas
  • It helps them be creative
  • It helps them interact with the world around them

Though schools are focusing on an Hour of Code this week, the lessons are available all year long on code.org .
