New City's Biddy Retire From Suffern High School

SUFFERN N.Y. -- The Class of 2016 isn’t the only group leaving Suffern High School this year. Seven teachers, including longtime track/cross country coach and physical education teacher Joe Biddy, and math teacher Bert Lyon, will be moving on.

The full list of retirees is as follows: Joe Biddy of the Physical Education department, Bert Lyon and Joseph Carfora of the Math department, English teacher Pamela Greenberg, Library Clerk Janie Howell, Athletic Secretary Barbara Ordas, and Donna Whitfield, a speech and language counselor.

Joe Biddy, a New City resident, who has been at the high school since 1967, explained his retirement with a sense of “Mountie Pride.”

“This senior class is one of the best I’ve ever seen. I always felt that when I go, I want to go out with a group that’s on top. We graduate together.”

Biddy will still coach track at Suffern High School as a way for him to ease out of a community that he has been part of for almost 50 years. Biddy summed up his other retirement plans with one word: golf.

Lyon, the Math Department Chairman known for his engaging, laugh-filled classes, spoke fondly of his time at Suffern.

“As a Suffern resident, a former student in the Ramapo Central School District, and a math teacher for 36 years, I am proud to have been a part of the Suffern High School family.”

“I was fortunate to work with such a talented department, and I am sure it will continue to thrive under the capable leadership of new chairman Brian Schwartz. Passion, sensitivity and dedication are the ingredients for success in education, and the Math Department delivers these qualities each day.”

The seven teachers retiring this year, like the class of 2016, will be duly missed.
