NYACK, N.Y. – The Board of Education of the Nyack Union Free School District will hold a public hearing Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Hilltop Administration Building on the Alternative Veterans Tax Exemption Law.

The state law passed in 2013 allows school districts to grant veterans a partial exemption from school taxes. Previous to the adoption of the new provisions, veterans were eligible for a partial exemption on municipal property taxes only – not school taxes. Under the current law, after a public hearing, the Board of Education may authorize a partial property tax exemption on school taxes to certain honorably discharged veterans for qualifying property.

Those eligible for the Veterans Tax Exemption include the following:

  • Military veterans who served in a “period of war” (World Wars I or II, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf)
  • Military veterans who received an expeditionary medal (Armed Forces expeditionary medal, Navy expeditionary medal, Marine Corps expeditionary medal, Global War on Terrorism expeditionary medal)
  • Un-remarried spouses of qualified veterans
  • Gold Star Parents (by additional local option)

There are three levels of the Alternative Veterans Tax Exemption to which veterans may be entitled.

The first level is known as the “wartime” exemption and provides a property tax exemption equal to 15 percent of the assessed value, with a maximum “market” exemption value of $12,000.

The second level is known as a “combat zone” exemption and is documented by a service medal. Such veterans may be entitled to an additional exemption of 10 percent above the “wartime” level, with a maximum “market” exemption of $8,000.

The third level is a “disability” exemption for veterans who suffered a service related disability as documented by the U.S. Dept. of Defense. This level provides an additional exemption equal to one-half of the veteran’s disability rating, up to a maximum “market” exemption of $40,000.

The Hilltop Administration Building is at 13A Dickinson Ave., Nyack.
