College-bound students in seven New York counties will soon benefit from years of declining enrollment at Western Connecticut State University , according to The Connecticut Mirror.

The university, which recently opened its fall 2016 semester with about 200 empty dorm rooms, will soon offer in-state tuition rates to New York students attending the school, according to The Mirror.

The offer – open to students in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties – will allow New Yorker students to save nearly $13,000 dollars a year, according to lohud.com, which reported in-state tuition costs slightly more than $10,000 while out-of-state tuition costs nearly $22,900.

Enrollment at the university has declined by 15 percent – or 713 students – during the past five years, according to The Mirror, which reported that the school has been forced to dip into its emergency fund during each of the past three years to cover expenses.

A Division III school in athletics, Western Connecticut offers 38 bachelor’s degree programs, according to lohud.com.

The new tuition rates for New Yorkers will begin for the fall 2017 semester, according to lohud.com.
