Black Bear Sightings In New Hempstead Have Residents Concerned NEW HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - These last three weeks have been atypical in Miriam Katz’s neighborhood in New Hempstead, just on the border of Pomona. Katz has lived on McNamara Road for 13 years and during that time bear sightings have been intermittent--they’d pop up here and there. But that is no longer the case for Katz who has begun to encounter black bears at her home on an almost daily basis. “It’s just insane,” she said over the phone. The bears are typically drawn to the smell of food and often show up and try to get into garbage cans in the neighborhood. When dealing with black bears …

Sister Augustine is an assistant principal at St. Luke School in the Bronx and has been on the festival’s board since 1992. Chestnut Ridge Music Fest Brings Back Clean, Family Fun CHESTNUT RIDGE, N.Y. - The Kodak pictures in Skip Herman’s photo album are filled with families, smiling people, and some well-known--legendary, even--guests. The Hungry Hollow Family Music Festival used to be held in Chestnut Ridge and came about in the 1990s when Herman’s kids were enrolled at the Green Meadow Waldorf School along with the children of local musician and Rockland resident Tom Chapin. The impetus for the festival was a school fundraiser and the two came up with the idea. Herman built the stage and Chapin performed for the kids.  It built up steam in the ‘90s but it’s popu…
